The transcendental experience of snorkeling with hundreds of colorful varieties of exotic fish, turtles and octopus in a warm and placid bay is just one of many pleasures to be found in the small, gated resort community of Puerto Aventuras, less than an hour and a half south of Cancun.
The town is filled with gracious, welcoming locals and the security is tight, with guards gating the entrance to the town, and most facilities employing private security. There are no signs of crime or poverty in the town, as it is purely a fishing and recreational resort.
Snorkeling, "Snuba" and KiteSailing in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico
Sailboat trips, fishing excursions, kite sailing and "snuba" (a cross between snorkeling and scuba diving) are also offered for those who seek adventure at sea. The deep blue Caribbean waters here are contained by a reef that makes snorkeling, swimming, bodysurfing and boogie boarding in the bay just outside the marina a peaceful indulgence.
Luxury Accommodations in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico
The town offers a handful of hotels and many condos which are available for private vacation rentals. These are comfortably furnished, and include pools and maid service. For an upscale, intimate choice, try the Omni Puerto Aventuras hotel, with its swim-up hot tub bar positioned right on the shore, gourmet restaurant, infinity and kids’ pool. There’s also an all inclusive Dreams resort, as well as several other all inclusive options. On the downside, "PA", as the locals call it, is not inexpensive. Rooms start at $175.00 US a night, and restaurants are in the medium to expensive price range.
Visitors to the town will also find a nine hole golf course and a smattering of tennis courts in this small, private community. Fishing trips can be arranged through many outfitters, and the Fat Cat is a party catamaran that takes boaters out for snorkeling and sightseeing trips along the coast.

The main focus of the marina is Dolphin Discovery. There’s a view of frolicking dolphins from almost every al fresco dining seat in the restaurants along the marina boardwalk. Kids of all ages can swim with and even ride on these gentle and friendly beasts. Contact them in advance, or visit their bustling shop on the marina to sign up for one of their dolphin encounters. While this experience is exciting and fun, expect to pay over $100.00 US for a dolphin experience and a souvenir photo.
Mayan Ruins and Cenotes near Puerto Aventuras, Mexico
It’s only a short taxi ride from town to the famous ruins of Tulum. These whitish gray limestone structures have been preserved in a national park. They are all that is left of a port town built around A.D. 900 where Mayan Kings are said to have vacationed. The setting on the sparkling sea is stunning, and the traditional Mayan performances, souvenir stores and restaurants add to the historical allure.
An excursion to one of the many cenotes (se-NOTE-ays) nearby is also not to be missed. Aktun Chen, about 30 minutes from Puerto Aventuras, takes you deep into the Mayan jungle where a preserve contains such wildlife as spider monkeys, wild boar and toucans. The park staff provides snorkels and lockers for guests to explore a freshwater cave brimming with stalagmites and stalagtites.
Eco parks, sightseeing in Playa del Carmen and nightlife in Cancun await those who crave more excitement. But Puerto Aventuras has it all for anyone looking to relax and enjoy nature in a tropical setting. The official town website serves as a comprehensive travel guide for travelers interested in experiencing this incredibly beautiful area, which is especially well suited to travelers who can afford high end, luxury accommodations and dining.
